You have one defense against them: you can cut holes in the lines, but you can only have three holes open at the same time. The holes will repair themselves after a short period.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe trick to playing Painter is to hold the D-Pad in the direction that you want to go next. Holding the D-Pad down in an upper-left diagonal will make you immediately go up or left whenever you reach a path going up or left.
