Boulder Dash

Boulder Dash for the Atari 2600 is back once again! Ten years have passed since Boulder Dash was initially released for the Atari 2600, a stellar achievement created by Andrew Davie and Thomas Jentzsch. The original release was limited to 250 copies, and once those were sold, the game remained unavailable until now. Unfortunately, our license agreement with First Star Software at the time did not allow us to satiate additional demand for the game.

Boulder Dash has a new owner, BBG Entertainment, and we were able to work out a new license agreement to once again bring Boulder Dash back to the Atari 2600! And this release is not limited in numbers, so anyone who would like a physical copy of the game can now purchase one. This new version features beautiful, brand new artwork from William Thorup to differentiate it from the original release. We're even including a 10" x 14" poster of the artwork! The game can also now be purchased without the box if you have no interest in collecting boxes.

About

Andrew Davie and Thomas Jentzsch worked on an Atari 2600 port of Boulder Dash for almost a decade. Together, these two Atari 2600 veterans used their insight and sophisticated knowledge about the Atari console to bring to life a faithful rendering of the classic, action-puzzle game (first released on the Atari 8-bit computer platform in 1984) from First Star Software, Inc. Game-play, sounds, and graphics have been faithfully reproduced, culminating in a game for the Atari 2600 unlike any previously seen.

Boulder Dash for the Atari 2600 features exact implementations of all 16 caves and 4 intermissions from the original game, playable with five levels of difficulty, providing over 80 unique levels of challenging fun. The physics, sound, and graphics are as exact as possible on the Atari 2600, and the game-play and timing are exactly the same as in the original version of the game. In short, this is a not-to-be-missed masterpiece!

Get a Boulder Dash Box!

If you'd like a boxed copy of Boulder Dash, please select "Box Upgrade: Yes" at the top of the page before adding Boulder Dash to your cart. Our boxes are professionally printed and include a box insert to hold your Boulder Dash cartridge in place. We want you to play our games, so we have not sealed or shrinkwrapped the boxes in any way, allowing you easy access to the game cartridge and manual.

These boxes are the same size as boxes Atari produced for their games "back in the day". They look great sitting on a shelf with your other boxed homebrew games, or alongside games from the classic Atari 2600 library. We only have a limited number of boxes for each game, and there is no guarantee they will become available again once our supplies are exhausted.

AtariVox Support

If you have an AtariVox or SaveKey plugged into the right-hand joystick port, your high scores will be saved permanently and reloaded when you revisit the game later (as long as the AtariVox or SaveKey is still plugged into the second controller port). The previous high score is displayed in red after a game is completed.

Additional Information

Included with Boulder Dash is the game cartridge, full-color 24-page manual, and a 10" x 14" poster featuring William Thorup's newly-created artwork for this re-release of the game. You can optionally purchase a professionally printed box (see above). Boulder Dash supports NTSC, PAL, and PAL60 television standards through the use of the difficulty switches.

I'm so happy that the official Boulder Dash port for the Atari 2600 is back in the store! Boulder Dash was one of my favorite games on the Commodore 64 and this conversion to the Atari 2600 is just incredible. Thomas and Andrew did an excellent job on this port, with all the details from the original game being available. The title music is so good that I usually let it play for a couple of minutes before starting the game :)

A very impressive technical achievement. Boulder dash running on a pong console, without any ARM accelerator ! You've got to see it to believe it. Beyond this being a programming marvel of its own, it's also an excellent game, quite on par with the C64 version I had when I was 10. Kudos to Andrew and Thomas for the effort. They deserve a good place in the hall of fame of VCS programmers. And thanks for the manual which traces the up and downs of the birth of this big game.

A faithful adaptation of the classic, it's amazing that a game of this type has been released for the Atari 2600. Even the title music is there (and sounds *amazing*). The manual provides a fascinating blow-by-blow account of its development - easy it was not!

Amazing! Perfect conversion. Unbelievable. Booklet contains developer's notes: Nice background information. Some facts sound familiar, because I have reverse engineered the CPC version :D Greetings from Munich/Germany. [102€ for the boxed edition including tax (16€)]

Really glad to see this game back in print. I missed out on the earlier releases, but snapped this up at PRGE. Really fun game. It's a classic.
