Get Into the Zone!

Step up to the lane, take a breath, and throw the ball right into the Strike Zone. For the first time, Strike Zone Bowling brings the real and unforgettable perspective of the bowling experience to your Atari 2600.

Pull your average out of the gutter with each strike you make while picking up every spare. Getting into the zone, topping your best score, and splitting your opponent’s will to play; all will bring you closer and closer to that perfect game.

This is it. The oil pattern is ideal, the loft of your ball testifies to your disciplined form, and the perfect hook of the ball’s path alludes to the best possible outcome. Will this last throw make your perfect game?

How To Bowl

Are you ready to step up to the line and bowl that perfect game? Here are the basic steps on how to play (you'll find additional information in the printed manual):

  • Move the bowler's position using left or right on the joystick.
  • Start your approach by pressing up on the joystick. Notice that the Shot Meter at the bottom of the screen is changing.
  • After the Shot Meter reaches its maximum width, it will begin decreasing. Pressing the fire button at any point while the Shot Meter is decreasing will release the ball.

When is the best time to release the ball? It depends on how you want the ball to spin. All bowls are the same strength in terms of the speed of the ball.

Pressing the fire button determines the spin of the ball, and, as a result, how much the ball will curve left or right down the lane. Just remember these three rules:

  • Pressing the fire button before the yellow Shot Meter reaches zero will result in a spin to the right.
  • Pressing the fire button when the meter is at zero will result in a straight shot.
  • Pressing the fire button after the green Shot Meter begins increasing will result in a spin to the left.

Let's go bowling... :)

Strike Zone Bowling succeeds in not only creating a satisfying game play experience but it also simulates the culture of bowling. From the opening scene outside the bowling center, to renting shoes and hanging around after the game with score dependent hangout scenes. The game captures the full atmosphere of a night at the lanes. I appreciate all the attention to detail that went into making this game. I really like the in “the zone” play mode, which simulates the idea that when you are in that zone, the gameplay comes easy, almost without even trying. It can be argued the harder the game is, the less fun it is to play, so implementing a novice mode is something I certainly appreciate. There was a lot of polish added to the game in the form of animated cut-scenes and game ending images. The game has that “one more try” effect. I keep wanting to try playing again to improve my score.

Been waiting for this cartridge for the longest time. Gameplay is outstanding and I love the "cut scene" graphics which are so simple but add so much to the game. Easy to get the hang of things and takes Bowling to a new level on the 2600 while maintaining the simplicity charm. Must have for anyone's collection.
