Matress Monkeys

Jumping on the bed is a favorite pastime for these two little monkeys. They’ve even made a game out of it to see who can catch the most flies. Sounds like fun, but this game isn’t without dangerous risks! Bounce too high and end up in the ceiling fan. Lose control and fall off the bed.

Join our mischievous monkey duo as they bounce on a wavy waterbed, chasing flies and dodging a pesky ceiling fan. Experience the thrill of waterbed mayhem, laugh-out-loud fun, and frenetic flying insect action. What will your play style be? Take your chances and go for the glory... or practice patience and go the distance? Can you conquer the waves, dodge the dangers of the fan, and be first to the bonus banana?

Get ready for a splashy adventure that guarantees endless excitement!

Gameplay

The object of the game is to collect as many flies and bonus bananas as possible, while avoiding the deadly ceiling fan. After the first stage, the player must also avoid falling off the bed.

While your monkey is on the mattress, use the joystick to move left and right. Once airborne, you can slightly influence your monkey’s direction with the joystick. The button will pause the game.

In the challenge stage, the roles are reversed, and you play as the fly! Use the joystick to move your fly up, down, left, right, and diagonally. Try to burst all the bubbles before the 20 second timer runs out. Look out below! The monkeys are trying to catch you!

Chameleon Cart

Mattress Monkeys is the first game to take advantage of Phantom Logic Studios' new Chameleon Cart! This new innovation brings two versions of the same game on a single cartridge. The Chameleon Cart is designed to adapt to both the Atari 2600 and Atari 7800 consoles.

Plug it into a 2600, and you’ll get the classic gameplay you expect. But when you insert it into a 7800, the game transforms with enhanced graphics, bringing more detail and color to your gaming experience.

Beautiful visuals, bouncy concept. Mixed execution.

Mattress Monkeys brings a charming and quirky twist to the classic Circus Atari seesaw mechanic; this time with two monkeys bouncing on a waterbed. Each jump sends the other monkey skyward to snag flies and bananas while avoiding a dangerously low ceiling fan. There’s even a humorous challenge stage where you play as the fly, which adds a fun change of pace.

The game’s physics are interesting but can take a while to get the hang of. Even after some practice, the height and trajectory of each launch can feel a bit unpredictable, making the gameplay less consistent than the great concept suggests. I didn’t quite get that strong “one more try” pull after a run.

Visually, however, the game shines. The flies are beautifully drawn and animated, and the overall presentation is impressive; especially the enhanced graphics when played on a 7800. The cheerful music fits perfectly and adds to the game’s personality.

There’s a option in the menu to switch to PAL colors, though automatic PAL detection (or a separate PAL build) would have made this even more seamless. When playing on a 7800, the game features upgraded graphics, but PAL color support isn’t available in that mode.

In the end, Mattress Monkeys boasts wonderful visuals, great audio, and a fun idea. The gameplay may feel a bit uneven in single-player, but it likely shines much brighter when played competitively with two players.

wish i could play it

i ordered the pacman 2600+ system and this game a few weeks later. but i cant even play the game since the game requires me to update the system but cant figure out the newest firmware to make the game work so i paid 60$ for a paper weight. i dont blame the game but atari. I'm new to atari + and this left me not wanting to buy anymore new games from atariage and about to return everything since every step so far has been nothing but headaches to even try to play this game.
