Panky the Panda

Gameplay

As Panky the Panda, you must rescue your brother from the poacher's cave. But it will not be easy! The poacher's lair is packed with various minions as well as secret rooms disguised as unassuming walls, so stay on the lookout! Depending on the amount of keys and special items in his inventory, Panky can move through over 120 danger-filled screens.

While exploring the caves, stay alert, as there are many dangers that can put a quick end to your brother's rescue! These include bats, cave pigs, duck goons, fireballs, spiked platforms, and more! And also be careful not to fall to your death as Pandas cannot fly! Be on the lookout for the six keys that will open doors throughout the cave. And watch for special items that can help you on your quest! These include the candle, high jump boots, flute, holy book, and snow boots.

Remember that not all walls are as they appear! The cave is filled with secret pathways used by the poachers. If you get stuck, we've included a map that could offer a clue to help you past your current quagmire!

The game oozes quality from the main character Panky to the level design. Playability is high including the need for just one more go. The music is catchy and I find myself looking forward to more adventures with Panky the Panda! It is a great example of what the 2600 can do with a great coder.

Unbelievable. Compares well to early NES platformers, and has a certain Metroid quality to it. It even has a full musical score!

Panky the panda is an interesting and very advanced Atari 2600 adventure video game. I will admit, I have always preferred shooter games over adventure games. I have never found it much fun to travel down a section of a game, dying along the way, just to find a locked door that you have to find a key for, so it can be opened, so you can continue. This game is built on this concept. If you enjoy spending hours exploring different sections of a game then this game is for you. You will have to find all six keys and special items so you can explore all the sections, in order to complete this game. ( this game is large and complex). I will admit, I cheated and watched a walk through on YouTube so I could finish the game. This game looks great and the controls are very responsive, which you will need to make some spot on jumps if you want to survive. The game does allow unlimited continues, and most importantly, you can keep all the keys and special items you have found to that point. My only complaint would be, once you finish the game, the desire to keep playing the game diminishes. The game has no score to try and beat. Maybe if the game kept track of how many times you had to continue you would want to keep playing the game over and over again. For example: if you beat the game and continued 50 times, then you could try beating the game with less continues.

Superb and challenging platformer. I thoroughly enjoyed this game. My daughter asks me to play it all the time.

Even though you may cuss at the screen from dying repeatedly on difficult jumps, it gets easier the more you played it.

Thankfully, when you "Continue" you keep all of your items!

It's amazing what these programmers are able to do with this system now.
